Dutch Association for Corporate Art Collections (VBCN)
Culture should know no boundaries. In the Netherlands, many corporations, organisations and institutions are dynamic art collectors. Most of their collections are not open to the public; they are assembled and managed by specialised employees. Corporate art collections have become increasingly influential in the art world, and for this reason a large number of corporate art departments have decided to join ranks, forming the Dutch Association for Corporate Art Collections (Dutch acronym: VBCN). Besides their indiviual activities, the various corporate collections aim to play a collective part in the changing cutural climate of the Netherlands and beyond. Culture, after all, should know no boundaries.
Because corporate art collections, as opposed to museological collections, operate from within the corporate initiative, they enjoy considerable independence. On various levels they function as a bridge between different parties. Correspondingly, the VBCN aims at collaboration in a variety of fields. Not only conservation and management issues are the focus of discussion, but also the composition of the individual collections and the possibilities of joint presentations and other projects. To a great extent, the daily organisational practice of the different corporate art collections is very similar, but there are also many notable differences.
The VBCN wishes to provide a platform for collaboration among its members, but additionally intends to initiate a dynamic dialogue with other representatives from the cultural field, belonging to museums, commercial organisations or ‘alternative’ projects (such as artist initiatives). The VBCN sets out to establish its name as a dynamic organisation, one that is independent, boundary-crossing and inspirational.
